This exercise is from the Core Skills section on developing Speed Techniques. As usual, check out the normal speed audio first.
Now we take the same B dim7 runs from the previous exercise, and break them up a little. This serves to extend them, and also teaches your fingers to be able to skip strings / frets without interrupting flow.
Again we ascend through the four B dim7 notes across each pair of strings. But notice that after reaching the 2nd note on the G string we drop back down to the previous pair of notes on the D string again, and carry on as normal from there.
Next we descend through the same step pattern as the previous exercise. However, this time we do a bigger jump halfway through. After reaching the Ab note on the A string you need to quickly skip back to the B string and then continue back down to the end.
The trick to both runs here is to focus on your 1st finger. That is the finger that needs to be in the right place at the right time after each 'skip'. When you know the string change is about to come up, mentally focus on the fret you need your 1st finger to be on and make the switch as fast as you can. You will need to practice this until you get the hang of it, but it is a useful trick to learn. Whatever run / scale / step pattern you use, you can always extend it for longer and make it sound cool by skipping around the strings like this!
