This ActionTab is from Theory section on Alternate Tunings where we are looking at Open Tunings - namely Open D Tuning (DADF#AD).
Here we play through a number of techniques to show the advantages of an open tuning, including 1 finger chords, Bottleneck / Guitar Slide and natural harmonics.
Start with the bottleneck slide on your little finger. This was a full length slide, but you could use a half-sized one too. You need a higher action (distance between strings and fretboard) for sliding, or the slide will bump against the fretwires and sound clunky.
Starts with fingerpicking + blues
Enter some natural harmonics
1 finger chords
Swap to a pick on the last chord and...
Get jiggy with the slide
Remember that with bottlenecks you need to slide over the fretwire to get the right note. If you just bring your slide up to the centre of the fret (where you'd normally place your finger to play), you'll get flat notes.
End with harmonics
With harmonics, touch the string over the fretwire, pick, instantly release your finger and you should get a strong harmonic.
Check out the Core Skills section for more on specific techniques and how to do them.
