The lead for this song involves swapping between 5 main riffs. For the most part, each riff is nice and easy and beginner-friendly. There is one exception, which we'll look at below. You can hear both guitars played together here - this is particularly helpful for tracking your way through the song parts. Use medium distortion for the lead (so just add a bit more than for the rhythm guitar).
Riff 1 - This really is nice and easy. Just hold the one C (no 5th) chord shape and strum away happily. Use your thumb over the tope edge of the fretboard to mute out the low 3 strings.
Riff 2 - Simple little melody. Later in the song this lick is extended.
Riff 3 - The hard bit. Actually, it's pretty simple stuff for the fretboard hand, it's the strumming that's tricky. Thumb mute out the low strings if you wish. The trick to getting this is the usual - take it very slow and build up speed. However, halfway through you need to start releasing the high E string for 2 strokes and then muting it again instantly. Follow this pattern on the 2 high strings:
d - u - d - u - d - u
0 - 0 - x - x - x - x
8 - 8 - 8 - 8 - 8 - 8 - repeat this twice then
d - u - d - u
0 - 0 - x - x
8 - 8 - 8 - 8 - (i.e. take out two down / up muted strokes) then straight back to the start again and repeat.
d = downstroke
u = upstroke
0 = play the open note
x = mute the string
Keep playing the G note on fret 8 of the B string throughout. Also, mute at the 6th fret as we show to avoid playing harmonics accidentally. Switch to the Tablature View (under Tools) to see the pattern clearly.
It's a case of learning to co-ordinate both hands at speed. Stick with it and you'll get it, just focus on keeping the strumming very regular - each down / upstroke in consistent time. Then work on 'dropping in' the open notes on those certain beats.
After that part the song cycles back to Riff 1 and 2 again, this time Riff 2 is the extended version.
There's a gap for the bass / drums only, then the song returns to play through Riff 3, 1 and 2 in that order. Then play the bridge (new riff):
Riff 4 - Just strum through D major and F#5 as shown (thumb-mute the Low strings out of the D major chord if you wish).
Lastly is the outro:
Riff 5 - A simple little lick, just repeat it a few times and then end with this short variation.
