This exercise is from the Core Skills section on developing Speed Techniques. As usual, check out the normal speed audio first.
Here we take our 2 pentatonic 'box' licks from the previous exercise and go mad with them up the fretboard. This time we start at Fret 5, using boxes for the A minor scale.
As long as you have practiced the picking pattern from the previous exercise you should get this one relatively quickly. Just keep ascending up through the boxes along the top 2 strings. It's the same pattern each time all the way to the end.
This is a great little solo technique and is used across different styles of music. A good example of a very similar lick is that used by Zakk Wylde in the finale of the No More Tears solo (an excellent Ozzy Osbourne song).
This is very good for your finger co-ordination and speed. Stick with it and then start using your own box combos to make up your own solos!
Notice that for either box, the exact same picking pattern is used. So once you've learned the first box shape, just apply the exact same thing to the second.
1st Box shape (Fret 5) - 2nd Box shape (Fret 8) - 2nd Box shape (Fret 10) - 2nd Box shape (Fret 13) - 2nd Box shape (Fret 15) - 1st Box shape (Fret 17)
